Metis Black is one of those names you hear in the sex-positive world that inspires reverence. Principled and unwavering in her ideal of quality sex toys, Metis started a conversation about body-safe materials which quickly turned into a revolution … that revolution begat her company Tantus, Inc.

Metis believes in basic sex toys that get the job done, without all bright and sparkly finery that some enjoy. Simple, well-made toys that are free of any chemicals that might be harmful to your health. More than just a manufacturer though, Metis believes in good sex education an follows that up with a comprehensive section on the Tantus, Inc. website. Chock full of articles on how to find a sex-positive doctor to her own panel on toxic toys at the sex education conference CatalystCon it’s clear her commitment to supporting and informing her customers about sex is important. In fact, just yesterday Tantus announced that veteran sex educator and author of “Sex with the Lights On” Ducky Doolittle has come aboard to to be Tantus Education Coordinator. Ducky will be performing workshops on behalf of Tantus and providing trainings for retail customers and distributors among other duties. The hiring of Ducky Doolittle to represent the Tantus brand and it’s beliefs is further confirmation to me, that Metis is committed to sex education just as much as she is to safe, fun and beautiful toys.

So what kind of products does Metis choose to occupy her own nightstand? I’ll let her tell you …

Five Sex Toys …

Since 1998, as founder and president of Tantus Inc., I’ve been on the forefront of sexual education and safe effective sex toys as an industry leader. And yes, I’m a toy slut. Not many people in the industry will admit that, a significant amount don’t even play with toys, but I have always got my eye out for what is intriguing, and I own a vast collection of amazing sex toys.

What I’m not is a techno buyer. I have two Violet Wands (one a German deluxe model and one that was my Great-Grandmother’s from the 20’s), an e-stim machine because someone wanted us to make products for it, but I don’t tend to have much interest in the typical multispeed rotational internal devices. Vibratex was amazing in they gave me three different rabbit” style vibrators to try back in the day- one which actually worked for me, but it taught me that bells and whistles just really aren’t for everyone and definitely they aren’t for me. I don’t appreciate internal vibration at all and external vibration for me needs to be powerful. I keep only one battery style vibrator near my bed and it’s a titanium bodied vibrator, powered by 3 lithium batteries, created by a company Elemental Pleasures who unfortunately isn’t around anymore. (*I found the site and it appears the company has reappeared and you can purchase their vibrators HERE - LC)

I LOVE dildos and butt plugs, and while a basic dildo didn’t make my top 5 list, it would be a realistic silicone dildo that was 5 3/8” diameter. (*Personally, I love (and use) my Tantus Echo Vibrator as a dildo :) – LC)

Five Favorite Toys …

1.      Black Widow Connoisseur Harness* by Tantus (SheVibe is pre-selling) –  This is the harness I’ve wanted from the first time I strapped one on. It’s got HUGE attitude and it feels so amazing against my body. You really have to feel the quality of the leather and see the detailing close up. In honesty this line has been in the works since 2002, so Tantus took it’s time until we could really do it right and I’m pretty sure everyone will agree— we did. (* I saw this in person and you are going to LOVE how it feels. – LC)

2.      Saturn by Inner Space – Ray Cirino is an amazing designer who is legendary. He designed all the toys for the centerfolds of the old Penthouse magazines back when the budget was significant. My favorite of those shoots was a gilded bird cage theme with butt plugs with feather plumes, He was one of the first people making body safe products out of quality materials, Lucite and steel, and explaining why he chose the materials he did. He played with the toys and he could tell you intimately why each design was what it was. The toy is no longer available and he’s gone on to work on designs for sustainability projects, but he is one of the grandfathers of sex toy design. I traded Ray a Bend Over Beginner Kit for mine.

3.      Ryder plug by Tantus - The Ryder just really does meet all my criteria for what a plug should be. It took us three prototypes to get the curve from the shoulders to the neck exactly right- but we did it. I’ve never played with a plug that was so comfortable going in, or coming out.

4.      Pure Wand by Njoy - Greg DeLong is another one of those amazing designers that actually plays with toys and loves what he does. I was lucky to be introduced with Greg as he was meeting with the buyers from Babeland back in 2004. In fact the buyer brought me into the meeting. I’ve always loved playing with metal toys, but until Greg came they were all industrial, made for men. Greg made them elegant. The Pure Wand is pure genius.

5.      Plug Ins - I have three plug in vibrators in my dresser drawer. A Magic Wand, an Erosillator and a 7 in 1 Wahl. The one I use most often is The Magic Wand, but the one I recommend most to others, especially women who’ve never orgasmed, is the Wahl. The coil vibrator gets the job done, is inexpensive and very reliable. It’s also available where the other products aren’t. I think it’s the best beginner toy and it sets you up for a lifetime of savvy sex toy connoisseurship.

… and a lube.

You are going to get me in trouble with this because all the high quality lube manufacturers are dear friends— I used to write a lot of industry articles on lubricants. I’m going to have to say Pjur because I love silicone lubricant and their Light Love is just luxuriant. Also Richie Harris, President of Pjur USA, was the first person in the industry who was selling silicone lubricant and explaining to the industry why silicone. Others started producing silicone lube because Richie was doing such amazing business

The Pleasure Chest wants you to know that SEX IS BACK.

sexisbackLast March at CatalystCon East, The Pleasure Chest was set up in conference room with a digital camera, lights and a directive: to ask people about their sex lives for their SEX IS BACK project. I took part, as did a lot of way more fascinating, interesting people including some of the sex-positive community’s most illustrious icons like; Tristan Taormino, Maria Falzone, Jessica Drake, Buck Angel and Megan Andelloux. It’s affirming and inspiring in so many ways to hear how others, discovering their kinky sidelost their virginity,  had an embarrassing sex mishap, the best sex tips and accept who they are. Mine is below, but there’s even more sexy goodness on the SEX IS BACK site so check it out: SEX IS BACK

“THANK GOD ASHLEY MANTA MOVED TO CALIFORNIA FROM PHILLY.”

I’m not certain there’s a day that goes by where that sentence doesn’t leave my lips.

I had the good fortune to be on a sexuality and body image panel with Ashley Manta at CatalystCon West last month. Enthusiastic and eager she brought an exceptional skill-set and work ethic to the ta

ble, as well as a sense of humor and a vast compendium of knowledge.

Wise beyond her years, Ashley Manta is a sex-ed phenom. Erotic Hypnosis anyone? With a certification in hypnosis, Ashley’s your gal. Erotic hypnosis whilst discussing Shoepenhauer? Ashley has a Masters in Philosophy, so you’re covered.

Active in the Los Angeles sex-positive and Sex Geekdom communities, Ashley  advocates for a well-informed, sex-educated public, particularly around herpes awareness, body image issues and sexual abuse .

She also bakes a mean cupcake with buttercream frosting.

Like most sex educators, Ashley has a ton of toys (She has to. It’s her JOB). I asked her to pick five favorites and a lube and this is what she gave me:

 Five Sex Toys …

1. Fun Factory Stronic Eins – This toy actually thrusts! It’s a powerful silicone insertable and at the very top of my wish list! It curves slightly at the tip to reach the g-spot and the thrusting motion give the g-spot a pleasant massage that is both pleasurable and relaxing.

2. Tantus Juice - You can’t go wrong with Tantus toys, and this one is no exception! It has a gradually increasing thickness that is both pleasurable and non-threatening for beginners. Love it! As with all anal toys, this should be used with copious amounts of lube. Think you have enough? Use more.

3. Lelo Siri – I love this clitoral vibe. It’s great to use during penetrative sex because it can fit securely between two bodies without being unwieldy. Plus it’s silicone. (Are we noticing a trend? It’s true – I am a silicone addict)

4. Njoy Pure Wand – Taking a quick departure from silicone toys – I LOVE this toy. I had never enjoyed g-spot stimulation until I tried this toy. The combination of shape and the weight of this toy is fantastic! It feels delicious as you insert it, and once it’s in, everything you do feels great! Seriously: thrust it, twist it, vibrate it, whatever you do, this toy will provide pleasure.

5. Bandit Dildo – Made of incredible VixSkin (if you haven’t tried this material, you’re missing out!), this toy has a deliciously realistic feel. It’s also a good size to fit into most harnesses (I love the new Tantus line of harnesses that have velcro side closure and deliciously supple leather that looks AND feels sexy!)

 and a LUBE …

Sliquid - I avoid any lube that contains Glycerin or Parabens. That takes a lot of them off the table, unfortunately. Thankfully, the entire Sliquid line is glycerin and paraben free. Their anal lube doesn’t use any desensitizing agents (pain is there for a reason!) and their flavored lubes are sugar free so that they won’t cause yeast infections. This line is great quality and affordable. I love them all!

LC CheekyWeekly

It’s been another banner week here in the Cheeky household. DatingAdvice.com named www.LadyCheeky.com, one of their “Best Kinky Sex Blogs,”  RevelBody sent me their sonic vibrator. I am so excited to try it. I saw it at ANME this year and couldn’t wait to have my body connect with it’s proprietary sonic vibrations. Who knows, tonight my be the night! Also, my friend and fellow Sex Educator,  Ashley Manta and her man moved to L.A. – 4 blocks from me! Tonight is Sex Geekdom L.A. where I will be able to fraternize with other geeks of the sexual variety and next week promises to be cooler. Even better, I’ve found some cool links for you:

Sex in the Middle Ages: 10 Titillating Facts You Wanted to Know But Were Afraid to Ask

Fascinating! This is a lil taste:

“For a time, the Church actually approved of prostitution. Ironically, the practice was regarded as a way of preventing adultery and homosexuality on a larger scale, so it was viewed a necessary evil. St. Thomas Aquinas, one of the sterner theologians, wrote: “If prostitution were to be suppressed, careless lusts would overthrow society.”  Mmm Hmmm. you read that right, sista.

I Wanna Know Where Love Is: The First Brain Map of Love and Desire

When was the last time you thought about your insula and striatum? Not in a long time, you say? Well start thinkin’. Scientists believe they have pinpointed the parts of the brain responsible for taking us from sexual desire to love and releasing all those awesome chemicals that make us joyful, crazy horny and high as a kite. How you say? Well it has something to do with that nutty Russian Pavlov …

Naomi Wolf and Jim Pfaus Talk Sex

If you liked the previous story, sit back and get comfortable. I recently had the pleasure of speaking electronically with Dr. Pfaus of Concordia University, when after being inspired by his research, I contacted him with a question. He was delightful, wicked smart and posses a delicious enjoyment of curse words. He is one of the only scientists doing sex research today, and what his behavior experiments with rats show will fascinate you. Naomi Wolf is also a smart cookie and whether you like her or not, she brings up great issues and reports on her own experiences with orgasm and sexuality related to her vagina. Oh, that happens to also be the name of her latest book, Vagina: A New Biography. If you’re a sex geek like me, you’re going to love this YouTube video.

Ok, so this is a cheap way to ask you to sign up, burying this blatant request in a weekly feature. How do you see yourself as a catalyst for change?

By speaking out, as truthfully as I can about my own experience uncovering, indulging and ultimately integrating my sensuality. I hope I can encourage other women to explore, embark on or continue that journey, especially women over 40 and women with body image concerns.

Who or what was a catalyst for you?

Oddly enough, the TV show ‘True Blood.’ By watching it during the end of my marriage it sparked a realization in me, that I craved, needed and deserved to experience passion in my life. I owe it all to Bill and Sookie!

What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges or concerns facing us in the field of sexuality right now?

One of the biggest challenges we’re facing is helping people understand that women’s

sexuality and sensuality is just as vibrant, prevalent and vital as our male counterparts. Women enjoy and want to experience great sex just as much as men do … and often! We aren’t the

mercurial creatures that science and the media might make us believe. Our (women’s) sexuality is rich and sensual and absolutely nothing to be guarded or ashamed of. My greatest wish is for women of all ages is to realize, that their sexuality and their sensuality is to be celebrated and expressed, not ignored, shamed or diminished.

What do you feel are some of the most important/valuable positive changes that have been made in the world of sexuality in the past year?

This has been an interesting year for sexuality. I think the “Mission Creep” of sustained messages, like Dan Savage’s reiteration in his column and his new book about how we might re-think monogamy as the “ideal” monotheistic norm is important. His stance of a more flexible idea of what a successful partnership can look like is a powerful and crucial discussion to keep having. Although this idea is not newly proselytized by him, the release of his new book this year brought the topic to the fore in interviews and reviews, giving society another “booster shot” to start thinking of new paradigms when it comes to the choice of monogamy.

Also Tristan Taormino reviving the question “why feminist porn?” and the popularity of her book ‘The Feminist Porn Book.’ The book and Tristan has had a main stream cultural impact, making the need for feminist porn and the humanist idea behind it, more a part of the social conscience. “Feminist Porn” is more a part of the zeitgeist than ever before and I think we owe that to Tristan Taormino. I mean it was even mentioned on SNL!

Most recently though, I don’t think we can ignore the potential impact of Daniel Bergner’s research and ensuing book on female sexuality. Because it’s been getting a lot of press, it may help to drive home the fact that ‘What Women Want’ is sex and a lot of it!

Why do you feel it is important to bring the topic of your session, Does This Panel Make Me Look Fat?: Body Image and Sexuality, to CatalystCon West?

for the rest … CLICK HERE

What is CatalystCon?

CatalystCon is a conference created to inspire exceptional conversations about sexuality. It is about reaching out and stimulating those who attend to create those important conversations in their own communities, changing how we as a society talk and treat sexuality.  It is about stimulating the activist that is within all of us and sparking transformation in the way our friends, neighbors, children and even politicians discuss one of the most important aspects of humanity.

Dee Dennis regards this conference as a “melting pot of sexuality” that will unite sex educators, sexologists, sex workers, writers, activists, and anyone with a passion for creating change. “Knowledge is power, and sharing that knowledge is the first spark in igniting change.” This is the fundamental principle behind CatalystCon.  To get your tickets for CatalystCon West , Click HERE

How do you see yourself as a catalyst for change?

I think anyone is a catalyst for change who actively pursues being a part of the discussion about how to change an outmoded ideal. Hopefully, this pursuit never ends but becomes more passionate with each endeavor.

Who or what was a catalyst for you?

My blogs. Being able to express myself, unexpurgated gave me the freedom to make significant changes in my life.

What do you feel are some of the biggest challenges or concerns facing us in the field of sexuality right now?

Getting the meme out to the world that sexuality is as natural as breathing in a way that doesn’t seem preachy or “woo-woo” so that people from all walks of life can understand it.

LONG BEACH, Calif.—Evi, the revolutionary hands-free Kegel exerciser by health-conscious manufacturer Aneros, made its debut before an audience of sex experts, health advocates and discerning consumers at the CatalystCon conference in Long Beach, Calif., Sept. 14-16.

Evi was presented to CatalystCon attendees by Ducky Dolittle, a renowned sexpert of more than 20 years. Doolittle’s seminar, “Kegels and the Art of Orgasm,” offered conference attendees a guided tour of the female anatomy and the benefits of strengthening PC muscles, which control urine flow and contract during orgasm. A self-proclaimed “Kegel monster,” Doolittle offered her full endorsement of Evi, noting her personal mind-blowing experience with Aneros’ latest revolutionary design and subsequent partnership with the brand after personally contacting Aneros.

“It’s totally unique,” Doolittle said in her presentation of Evi. “Aneros understands the anatomy unlike any other company.”

CatalystCon organizer Dee Dennis stated, “I was thrilled Aneros chose CatalystCon to debut Evi. CatalystCon is about creating change, and I feel we created something groundbreaking by launching a product not at the traditional industry trade show, but instead with actual sex education, going right to those who will use Evi. The message Aneros sent by debuting Evi at CatalystCon was their first concern is not bottom line or sales, but the sexual health and well being of those who will be using Evi.”

The hands-free device is anatomically designed to fit all women and is made of a velvety smooth medical-grade silicone material guaranteeing users sensual stimulation while strengthening PC muscles. With correct insertion, Evi alternately stimulates the G-spot and clitoris with a simple Kegel exercise, essentially providing pleasurable incentives for Kegel fitness.

Firm enough to pivot and hold its shape while providing comfort, Evi delivers an inner fullness by adapting to the anatomical contours of a woman’s vagina. Contracting and relaxing pelvic floor muscles causes Evi to caress the anterior wall of the vagina known as the G-spot, while externally stimulating the clit. The pace and pressure can be controlled by rocking and twirling the hips, thus offering women versatile stimulation.

Early reviews of Evi report strengthened PC muscles and intense orgasms marked by involuntary vaginal contractions, to which Evi responds by elongating the experience and often leading to female ejaculation. For newbies, Evi by Aneros offers a valuable tool for gauging PC muscle strength, while encouraging fitness with rewarding results during each use.

Sex Blogger and sex-positive activist Lady Cheeky said, “I was interested in Evi primarily for its Kegel focus. I found Evi provided me with a comfortable, and dare I say, enjoyable workout for my pelvic floor muscles. Once inserted, my Kegels were immediately engaged and intuitively clasped onto Evi, making the Kegel exercise itself thought-free. Extremely comfortable, I could walk, sit, and drive, all the while knowing Evi was secure and doing its job. Evi is like a barbell for your lady bits!”

“We attend a lot of conferences and have interacted with a lot of sponsors, and we’ve never been as impressed as we were with Aneros at CatalystCon,” stated EvilSlutopia.com co-founders and Executive Editors Lilith and Jezebel. “The fact they chose CatalystCon for the Evi launch says a lot about them as a company and their dedication to sex positivity and sex education …We’ve never seen any sponsor treat the conference organizer so well or be so genuinely nice, helpful, and professional and just overall fucking awesome to everyone.”

At the conclusion of Doolittle’s presentation of Evi at CatalystCon, a raffle sent several enthusiastic winners home with an Evi of their own—however, discarded packaging in the women’s bathroom suggested some women couldn’t wait to take Evi for a spin.

The demand for Evi also is evident on its dedicated Facebook page at Facebook.com/eviByAneros.
